Omnibus Bill to Include Increased Funding for Border Security

The omnibus spending bill being debated in Congress this week includes a significant drop in the funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The fiscal 2008 omnibus would provide a total of $36.3 billion in total spending for DHS, which is greater than the president's request but less than that provided in fiscal 2007.

While overall DHS spending will decease, the bill includes an infusion of $2.7 billion in proposed emergency spending for border security which would go towards initiatives to build border fencing and enforce immigration laws.
